Cowan Trail Marker

The Cowan Trail was the start of Tent Town, Minitonas and the Swan River Valley so it is only appropriate that a cairn has been erected to commemorate this important part in the Swan River Valley's history.

The cairn is located approximately four kilometers south of town on Provincial Road 366 and the west bank of the East Favel River.  It commemorates the Cowan Trail which the first settlers travelled in 1898.The Cowan Trail was a wagon trail along the northern edge of the Duck Mountains that wound from the end of the railway at Cowan to the first settlement in the valley, Tent Town.  Most of the original trail is currently maintained as a snowmobile and ATV trail. To learn more about how the Cowan Trail helped to shape the present day Minitonas please check out our history section.
